4/6/2011 - LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- On February 14, 2011, Airman 1st Class Olivia Oteo, 47th Medical Operations Squadron, launched the Laughlin Airmen Serving Our Community volunteer program to provide ongoing support to non-profit charities in the Del Rio community.

"LASOC is an amazing program because it brings Laughlin units together to better serve the Del Rio community," said Airman Oteo.

Since the launch of the program, LASOC has provided more than 130 hours of service to the community with the aid of 48 Laughlin volunteers. The program is open both to officers and enlisted personnel.

"Even family members can help out and children can volunteer at the Bethel Center of Val Verde Inc. and Entertainment Night," Airman Oteo said.

The LASOC program currently works with more than 11 organizations in the local community and is supporting three charities this month: the Bethel Center of Val Verde Inc., National Angel Food Ministries and First Baptist Church Food Bank, all of which run on donations and volunteer aid.

"These guys have truly been a blessing," said Gisela Lenz, First Baptist Church Food Bank. "We didn't know how we were going to get the volunteers we needed and when the LASOC volunteers came to help they were so efficient and nice. This is the best thing to happen to our ministry. All the families who receive meals are so grateful for LASOC's help."
