LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --   In today's world, you can find medication for any illness.

You can schedule a surgery to heal or enhance your body.

But one area of your body has no clear cut remedy: your lower back. Nearly everyone experiences back pain at some time.

However, there are many measures people can take to prevent low back pain.

In recognition of low back pain prevention month, here are a few preventative measures that can assist you with a faster recovery for low back pain. Some of them also have added health benefits.

1. Lifting objects safely and properly to protect your back. Lift with your leg muscles, not your back.

2. Maintain a healthy nutritious diet. Getting plenty of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D may help prevent osteoporosis, which can lead to compression fractures and low back pain.

3. Exercise regularly to keep your back healthy and strong. Exercise programs that include aerobic conditioning and strength training can help reduce the recurrence of low back pain.

4. Maintain a healthy weight to avoid excess strain on your lower back.

5. Protect your back while sitting by ensuring proper support for your lower back. Standing posture is also important; when you stand, your ears, shoulders, hips, and knees should be in line with one another.

6. Try different sleeping positions that protect your back. If you sleep on your side, try putting a pillow between your knees. If you sleep on your back, use a pillow under your knees.

7. Footwear is an important factor that most individuals overlook. Ensure proper footwear is worn for the various types of surfaces you may encounter in your daily schedule.

8. Manage the stress in your life and have balance in your life between your responsibilities: family, work, school, hobbies, etc.

9. If you're a smoker, quit. Smoking increases your risk of bone loss (osteoporosis) and increases your sensitivity to pain. Smoking also interferes with blood circulation by tightening the arteries, which makes it harder for blood to flow, and by decreasing the amount of oxygen the red blood cells can carry. Spinal discs do not have their own blood supply, but receive nutrition in part from the blood supply to the vertebral bones above and below them. Decreased circulation may increase the speed of degeneration and/or slow the healing of the discs.

These are some changes you can incorporate in to your life to help prevent low back pain. Achieving one at a time can do wonders. Sustaining all nine on a daily basis promotes a healthy lifestyle!
