April 2014 family advocacy classes

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 47th Medical Group is offering a series of family advocacy classes open to all base personnel at no charge ranging in topics from baby care to stress management classes throughout the month of April.

OB orientation and "Bundles for Babies": This class is an overview of what to expect during pregnancy. Participants will receive information related to the prenatal period, labor and delivery, and post-partum. Fathers are encouraged to attend. This class is mandatory for all pregnant active duty members. "Bundles for Babies" is included in coordination with the Laughlin Airman and Family Readiness Center. Pediatrics, Tricare, dental, and the Health & Wellness Center will brief on prenatal related topics. Lunch is provided for attendees. Registration is mandatory to attend.

Living Stress Free: Are phone calls, meetings, projects, and events getting to be too much of a stress? Participants will learn to identify stress triggers and discover appropriate relaxation and visualization skills to handle stress. After this class, participants will understand why stress happens and how to reduce it, renew themselves, and take on the challenges of work.

Teen Talk: This class will examine some of the issues teenagers face. Topics include: cyber bullying, building communication, wellness, abusive relationships, and other topics which will interest teens. Youth do not have to be enrolled at the youth center to attend!

Parenting Essentials: This course will examine some of the issues parents face with teens and children. Topics include: cyber bullying, building communication, drugs and alcohol, suicide prevention, and other topics which will interest parents.

Couples Communication: This workshop helps you understand yourself and connect with your partner in more constructive and meaningful ways. You will learn how to communicate effectively about day-to-day events and important issues. Class is designed for all ages and stages of a relationship. Whether engaged, recently married, or been married for many years, there is always something new to learn and aspects of the relationship to explore.

Second Trimester Class: This class provides information related to the second trimester in pregnancy. Dads are encouraged to attend.

1-2-3 Magic Parenting: Are you trying to find an effective and positive way to discipline your child? 1-2-3 Magic offers parenting solutions that are easy to learn and work with children ages 2-12. Course consists of one-2 hour session.

Breastfeeding Basics: This class provides basic education needed for mothers to breastfeed. Class overview includes: making informed decisions about infant feeding methods, prenatal preparation, getting breastfeeding off to a good start, weaning and dealing with the common challenges of breastfeeding. Dads are encouraged to attend.
