Roberto Bobby Barrera (RBB) Elementary School, Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, was designated a 2022 Purple Star School. The Purple Star Award recognizes Texas district and charter schools that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.

The qualifications to receive this award included: maintaining a dedicated page on its website with resources for military families, providing a campus-based liaison, supplying a campus transition program for students, and participating in events like “Month of the Military Child.”

“We are bursting with pride,” said Maria Hudgins, RBB Elementary School principal. “The Purple Star [Award] validates the commitment we have toward supporting our

military-connected students and families.”

Our service members' children go through multiple location and education changes throughout their parents’ career, which is why it's crucial to provide them with the support and tools needed to succeed.

“When families transition in and out of Laughlin Air Force Base, our goal is to help make that transition in the educational setting go smoothly,” said Janette Gomez, RBB Elementary School liaison program manager. “We work with the families to identify any needs and proceed with the appropriate support for our students.”

This two-year Purple Star designation will allow parents to feel confident that the school will go above and beyond to provide their children with every educational resource they need to succeed while residing at Laughlin.

“It is my hope that our families take pride in our school and in this great accomplishment,” said Hudgins.
