The city of Del Rio will hold a Memorial Day event at 10 a.m.  Monday at the civic center.

The annual event marks the city and Laughlin getting together in solidarity to remember those who have paid the ultimate price in the defense of the nation.

“We always take time out to honor the fallen on this sacred day,” said retired Maj. Gen. Prather, the event’s master of ceremonies.

Laughlin chaplains will open the ceremony with an offering of prayer. Afterwards, Laughlin’s honor guard playing a rendition of Taps and performing a 21 gun salute, along with Robert Wade who will sing “I’m Proud To Be An American.”

“Something we’re doing a little bit different this year is rather than featuring a speaker, we’re going to have veterans form each of the major conflicts we can find who will read the names of the fallen from that war,” said Joel Langton, who is helping organize the event.

Local elected officials will also be present to share their thoughts.

“This says a lot about the city of Del Rio that this will be one of several events taking place to honor the fallen,” said Col. Thomas Shank, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. “Del Rio does not pay lip service in honoring its veterans; it sets a standard for doing it right.”

Once the event is complete, HEB will provide refreshments for all attendees to the event.
