Throughout the month of April, Laughlin observed the Month of the Military Child, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the youngest members of Team XL, through base-wide events and community recognitions designed to celebrate the unique sacrifices made by military connected students.

Month of the Military Child, observed every April by the Department of War, was established in 1986 to recognize the millions of children who grow up in military families.

“Military-connected students bring a remarkable level of adaptability and global awareness to our classrooms, using their diverse life experiences to enrich discussions and foster a deep sense of empathy and inclusion within our local community,” said Janette Gomez, Laughlin Air Force Base school liaison program manager. “My core message to the children stationed here at Laughlin is that their strength is a true superpower, and they should always remember that their bravery and resilience serve our nation just as significantly as the service of their parents.”

At Laughlin the celebration of resilience was on display for the whole month, with Roberto “Bobby” Barrera Elementary school participating in “Purple Up Fridays.” The color purple, which represents the combined colors of all military branches, served as a visible reminder of the school’s appreciation for the resilience of military children.

This spirit of support continued with the "Rooted in Resilience" event hosted by the Laughlin Warrior Action Team. The WAT-led initiative focused on providing families with tools to navigate the challenges of military life, offering activities that emphasize emotional strength and the importance of a connected community.

Recognition extended off base during a San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School Division board meeting, where district leaders recognized the Month of the Military Child and the significant impact these students have on the local educational environment. The board’s acknowledgment underscored the vital partnership between Laughlin and the Del Rio community in ensuring that military children receive the support they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

"Seeing the community come together to honor Month of the Military Child truly highlights the incredible support system we have here for our youngest heroes," said Capt. Christine Del Aguila, 47th Flying Training Wing public affairs chief. "We are incredibly proud of their grit and the perspective they bring to our community every day."

As Laughlin salutes the end of the month, Team XL members remain committed to fostering an environment where every military child feels valued, supported and ready to face the future with confidence.
