After more than three decades of service Col. Joseph McCane, 47th Operations Group commander, will swap his service blues for civilian attire as the 47th Flying Training Wing celebrated his retirement here May 1, 2026.

Brig. Gen. David Fazenbaker, Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Director of Strategy, Plans, Requirements and Programs presided over the ceremony, highlighting McCane’s career and the exceptional performance required to achieve the status and position of group commander.

“When you look at Joe’s career, two things immediately stand out,” said Fazenbaker. “One is opportunity, and the second is performance, starting from the beginning where all great Air Force careers start, the open skies of west Texas. Being a First Assignment Instructor Pilot (FAIP) was a real opportunity for Joe, a place to hone his flying, to practice leadership.”

McCane’s career began as an Air Transportation Specialist and separated from Active Duty in 1996 at the rank of Senior Airman to join the ranks of commissioned officers. Following commissioning, he entered Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Laughlin AFB, Texas and was selected to remain as a FAIP in the T-1A Jayhawk. His career saw 10 different assignments and many deployments in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Prior to his assignment at the 47th Flying Training Wing, he served as the Chief of Staff, Special Operations Command South.

“Joe, you've made a huge difference over your career at a time when a difference was needed, our adversaries continue to plot ways to demise our country,” said Fazenbaker. “But because of your leadership in every unit that you have been in, we’re ready for them to try. It’s that preparation that deters them trying now, but most importantly, you have touched every Airman that you have led and gained the respect of everyone you have served with.”

Durning McCane’s time at Laughlin he led 1,100 active duty, civilian, and reserve personnel. Graduating more than 350 student pilots each year as the largest pilot producing base in AETC. Under his leadership, Laughlin operations excelled from innovations like Rapid Crew Swap, Quick Turn procedures and longer flying windows, furthering the pilot training syllabus.

“When we’re given a challenge, we heard no initially, and then we would get to yes,” said McCane. “I try to instill in everybody, all the leadership, everybody in this room, from the commander down to the airman, find a way to get to yes. If it’s not illegal, immoral, or unethical, find a way to get to yes.”

In his closing remarks, McCane thanked his family and friends for supporting his Air Force journey, as well as offering words of encouragement for the Airmen of the 47th Flying Training Wing.

“30 years have flown by so fast,” said McCane. “So, any aircraft, any station, Vader 01 is signing off for the last time. May you always have blue skies, clouds to chase, the runway in front of you, and gas in your tanks, Godspeed.”
