LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 47th Force Support Squadron (FSS) and Sul Ross State University are collaborating to offer graduate-level academics to graduating student pilots at Laughlin Air Force Base.
The partnership allows new aviators the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree aligned with their training experience via Sul Ross’s program extension.
“This is a huge win for our base and student pilots,” said Annette Shaw, 47th FSS force development chief. “They are in pilot training for so long and may not find the time for a master’s degree. Our new program will give student pilots that extra edge to push towards that goal.”
Student pilots are automatically eligible for two years upon completing Undergraduate Pilot Training. Pilots can earn up to 15 credit hours toward a Master of Science in Business (M.S.) and 12 credit hours toward a Master of Business Administration (MBA). The university also introduced a new M.S. or MBA degree pathway in Space Commerce, further contributing to their educational and professional development early within their Air Force careers.
“Pilot training is equivalent in scope and intensity to graduate‑level coursework, and formal recognition through this new program will translate into long‑term educational value,” said Master Sgt. Dylan Figg, 47th FSS interim senior enlisted leader.
The agreement serves as an expansion of Sul Ross State University’s association with Laughlin to offer educational opportunities to Airmen starting in June of last year.
