Welcome to Laughlin!

A message from Col. Lee Gentile, 47th Flying Training Wing commander

Greetings from Laughlin!

Congratulations on your new assignment to the 47 FTW and welcome to Team XL!

Laughlin AFB is one wing with one mission: Build combat ready Airmen, leaders and pilots. Every member of Team XL is dedicated to our mission, but the mission is increasing from 300 pilots a year to 500 pilots a year. To meet this mission, it will require innovative ideas, the willingness to take smart risks, the courage to try and to fail, a desire to learn, and a relentless drive to find smarter, better, and faster ways to achieve mission success. More simply put, it requires the bravado of the Airmen who spent four decades and two world wars proving the need for a separate and independent Air Force…changing the nature of warfare forever.

To do that requires a leader that puts Airmen first, ensuring that they have the training, resources, and guidance to meet their mission, works wirelessly to secure an environment where families can live and play, and finds a way to ensure our newly winged pilots and our Airmen are ready to deploy to combat when our nation calls. You are one of those leaders. It is an honor to have you join the ranks of the Fighting 47th and I look forward to watching you lead your Airmen to new heights.

In addition to a great base, an exciting mission and exceptional Airmen, you will find that Del Rio is a wonderful place to live and play. I will admit that it is not San Antonio, but there are a variety of activities on base (golf, bowling, trap and skeet), in town (parades, festivals, fairs, and local restaurants), and at Lake Amistad (hiking, scuba diving, boating, fusing and camping)…especially if you are willing to try a new activity. The 47th and Del Rio are very active on Facebook, so I encourage you to peruse the sites. I know you will be pleasantly surprised and say “WOW, Laughlin!”

I would also encourage you to check out our app: “Laughlin AFB,” which is downloadable via your Apple “App Store” or Android “Google Play.”

Again, welcome to Team XL,

Col. G.
