LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Unit and job title: 47th Student Training Squadron assistant director of operations
Why he XLed: Parsons oversaw the daily operation and administration of 14 flight commanders and 650 student pilots, and was also his commander’s first choice to head the coordination of retired Air Force Capt. Jerry Yellin, a World War II pilot. Parsons instructed 15 sorties that added up to 20 hours, and completed four supervisory tours. He selflessly volunteered his time to lead a team of 20 Airmen that put together his squadron’s holiday party that boosted the morale of more than 300 Laughlin Airmen. Parsons planned Capt. Yellin’s incentive flight and book signing, coordinating with six base agencies, and ultimately raised $2,500 for a documentary film. Lastly Parsons acted under pressure and expertly handled an in-flight emergency. His actions saved the lives of two Airmen and a $4.5 million aircraft.
