A spontaneous volunteer event for on-base Airmen happened on Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, March 18, 2017.

Senior Airman Moe Bolin, 47th Civil Engineer Squadron engineering apprentice, headed the team of 20 Airmen that helped pick up trash around base, but said that it was hardly work.

“I have a different perspective,” Bolin said. “I didn’t do it for beautification, I did it to network. Just to get people to hang out, because people have a heart to hang out regardless of what they’re doing.”

Bolin said that planning for the event happened at a fantastic four meeting Friday evening and he was only given hours to organize the event.

Airman 1st Class John McGovern, an event attendee, said that it gave him a chance to meet some new people.

“It never really felt like a chore,” McGovern said. “Some can say it was a chore, but I got to meet some great people.”

While cleaning, the team picked up trash and other odds and ends that ranged from wake boards to snow-goggles.

With the cleanup event’s success in spite of the short notice, Airmen were given to collaborate, Bolin is confident that Laughlin has the potential to do more.

“Just get out and do something,” Bolin said. “It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, just get out and do something and enjoy time with your neighbors.”
