Laughlin’s Green Dot team is now opening facilitator training for spouses at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.

The Green Dot program is one of the Air Force’s ways to combat violence and interpersonal conflicts; the move to have spouses onboard is aimed at expanding Green Dot’s influence, and bringing a wider scale of effectiveness to Laughlin’s community.

Sabrina Peña, 47th Flying Training Wing Green Dot program manager, is all for having spouses join the team, and said it’s a great opportunity for Green Dot to grow.

“Green Dot harnesses the power of individual choices to shift social norms, one action at a time.” said Peña. “The idea of changing the culture or reducing the number of people at Laughlin who are harmed by interpersonal violence can feel just too big to tackle, but the reality is all social changes in the past occurred with individual people doing small things when added together made for big change.”

“No previous experience in the field is necessary. If you have a passion for making Laughlin a safer place for all of us, you are needed,” said Peña. The program is looking for up to six applicants to join the team.

As a spouse looking to get into the program, Maria Rivera, a Green Dot volunteer, said she’s excited to lend a helping hand.

“In college I studied Psychology and volunteered with different advocacy and awareness programs,” said Rivera. “This is our first military base, so I thought this would be beneficial to get involved here at Laughlin.”

Peña encourages anyone interested to visit the information fair on Aug. 11, at AFRC inside the Losano Fitness Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The fair will provide information on how to join the Green Dot team, upcoming training opportunities and what the program entails.

“How can we see change in our community if we don’t include our spouses?” asked Peña. “They are an integral part of our community and are equally important to the Green Dot program success.”
