Job title and unit:
47th Medical Operations Squadron Bioenvironmental engineering technicians

Why they XLed: They quickly responded to work after a Laughlin member had been injured after a chemical-filled drum burst. They cordoned the area and donned air packs and chemical suits to assess health risks associated with the spill and collect samples. They identified toxic metals and volatile chemicals. After testing, they helped safely dispose of the remaining toxic chemicals and evaluated worker exposure to Occupational Safety Health Administration's high-risk chemicals.

They also performed 56 hours of air sampling and protected 24 personnel. After monitoring the base water quality, they collected four routine and three emergency samples, ensuring safe water for approximately 4,000 consumers. They manage, calibrate and check $563,000 worth of equipment.
