On April 22, 2013, the Air Force observed Earth Day, continuing the service's vision and commitment to "Conserve Today - Secure Tomorrow."

This year the Air Force is highlighting water resource management. Across the Air Force, many accomplishments have already been made. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, the Air Force reduced potable water intensity by 18.4 percent from the fiscal 2007 baseline. That is 5.3 percent better than FY 2011, and well ahead of the DoD Sustainability Performance Plan FY 2012 goal of 10 percent. The Air Force also reduced non-potable industrial, landscaping and agriculture water consumption by 4.6 percent from the FY 2010 baseline, once again exceeding the FY 2012 goal.

Thanks to the contributions of the Air Force team, these accomplishments were possible. Every action, no matter how small, can help make a difference. For Earth Day this year, we ask for your continued support to meet our water reduction goals. Some things you may consider this year for Earth Day include:
  • Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fixing it can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
  • If your toilet was installed before 1992, reduce the amount of water used for each flush by inserting a displacement device in the tank.
  • Use one glass a day or refill a water bottle to cut down on the number of dirty glasses.
  • Use a water-efficient showerhead. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and can save you up to 750 gallons a month.
  • Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
  • Washing dark clothes in cold water saves both on water and energy while it helps your clothes keep their colors.
  • Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.
  • Turn down your hot water heater temperature to save on energy costs.
  • Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.
  • Look for products bearing the EPA WaterSense label for items that have been certified to save 20% or more without sacrificing performance. For energy savings, look for the Energy Star logo.
The Air Force continues to look for new ideas and management practices to better utilize our resources. Thank you for your continued support as we become a more sustainable force.
