Now that W-2 forms are available for active duty Air Force members, people may take advantage of several options at Laughlin Air Force Base for free or discounted tax return programs.

The Laughlin legal office will be available for free assistance in filing returns. If you would like to take advantage of their personal expertise, you may call the legal office at 298-5172 to schedule an appointment once you receive all of your tax documents. The legal office will begin taking appointments as early as Feb. 4.

The tax assistance program at the legal office is open to all members of Team XL including spouses and civil service employees as well as members of the reserve component.

"We can handle more advanced returns than some of the free programs will let you file," said Capt. Scott Kirk, 47th Flying Training Wing judge advocate, "and we're probably going to be able to get you the same return as some of the programs that offer the maximum possible return."

The Military OneSource tax filing service is another free option. Through Military OneSource, people may file on line as early as Jan. 30. To begin, go to www.militaryonesource.mil and select the 'tax service' link. Eligibility requirements apply, which you can read about on the website.

Additionally, there are several other name-brand programs that offer military members free or discounted ways to file your return over the internet depending on your income and the intricacy of your return.

Returns are due to the Internal Revenue Service on Apr. 15, but the IRS suggests that you not wait until the last minute to file.
