The communities of Del Rio and Laughlin Air Force Base teamed up to help raise $56,000 for the Val Verde Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at the Running with the Bulls 5K Nov. 3.

The second edition of the five kilometer event featured more than 500 runners stampeding through the streets of Del Rio for a good cause.

"The amount of support we receive from Laughlin is unbelievable," said Bill Cauthorn, founder of Val Verde Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry. "Our operation would not succeed without their selfless efforts."

Volunteers from the 87th Flying Training Squadron, the 47th Student Squadron and others from around the base helped make the event happen.

First Lt., James Broncheau, one of the event coordinators, could not have been happier with the turnout for the event.

"There was a lot to live up to with how well last year's event went, but we reached our goals by working closely with our neighbors in Del Rio," said Broncheau.

Praise for the 5K was received from the leaders of both the community and Laughlin.

"This is a great cause, and I love to see our communities all coming together to help those in need," said Bobby Fernandez, Del Rio mayor. "The winner of today's race is our entire community."

Col. Thomas Murphy, 47th Flying Training Wing commander, echoed the mayor's words.

"When the community comes together along with the base, we make great things happen," said Murphy.

Loaves and Fishes and volunteers from Laughlin have begun plans for next year's event.
