Laughlin Chapel train with local clergy Published June 14, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Nathan Maysonet 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Laughlin Chaplain Corps hosted a day-long clergy day for members of the Del Rio religious community June 14 at the chapel here. The conference and workshop was developed to provide local religious leaders a better understanding of Laughlin and the wing's mission. "One of our core missions is to develop professional and disciplined leaders and our chaplains help us develop that professional capable force," said Col. Tom Murphy, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. "We could not do what we do without our chaplain staff here and the community that supports Team XL members who worship off base." Participating clergy arrived for an early breakfast before beginning the day's four workshops and a base tour that would showcase the Chapel's mission and its needs from the community. "Today's discussion made a number of possibilities apparent for Laughlin and the community to support each other," said Chaplain (Capt.) Brian Nierman, 47th FTW chaplain. "Our time together will help link people up spiritually and religiously." Topics discussed in the workshops ranged from how Laughlin's Chaplain Corps meets the religious needs of the base, religious freedom and boundaries in the military and the partnership the base has with its neighbors in faith. "We definitely have a working relationship with Laughlin and know where we fit into it," said Wayne Richardson, The Lighthouse pastor. "Events like this build camaraderie between the base and the community and show how we and the chaplain corps can help meet the base's mission." The day concluded with lunch at stripes and religious services at the chapel. "The work being done here is outstanding, the chaplaincy at Laughlin meets the needs of its Airmen and the community it belongs to," said Richardson. "We felt welcomed and feel that we can work together to reach a common goal."
