Once again, the Laughlin and Del Rio community teamed up for a good cause as the officer spouses club hosted an auction to raise more than $15,000 for local scholarships at the Ramada Inn in Del Rio March 3.

The Laughlin OSC hosted a night on the Red Carpet that entailed a dinner and a silent and live auction. More than 225 bidders competed for 100 packages ranging from trips to San Antonio's Riverwalk to peanut brittle. The winner of the peanut brittle anted up $200 while the trip went for $600.

"We were thrilled with the turnout," said Carla Murphy, event organizer. "A big thank you goes out to all the sponsors, volunteers and the wonderful people that came out and made the OSC auction a huge success."

Last year, the event passed out nearly $13,000 to local students.

"That's what makes us really proud of this event," said Murphy. "It helped give 13 people a better chance at an education last year. This organization has been giving out scholarships, providing more than 25 years and we've been told there are some people who would have never had a chance at college if it hadn't been for our initial scholarship. That's why we do this."

Bobby Fernandez, Del Rio mayor and long-time school board superintendent, said the event is a community staple.

"This event is awesome," he said. "People know they can come out, have a good time and the positive waves from it go through our community for years. People come back to our community better educated, in a position to really make a difference, because of the start they get thanks to this one night."

People can get scholarship applications at local high schools, Laughlin Education office and local libraries. The deadline for turning the applications in is March 19.
