Laughlin to host National Prayer Luncheon Published Feb. 23, 2012 By 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- On March 8, Team XL will host the annual National Prayer Luncheon observance with Chaplain (Col.) Bobby Page, Air Education and Training Command chaplain. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Club XL and is free for anyone who can get on base. Chaplain (Maj.) Dwayne Keener, 47th Flying Training Wing chaplain, said the idea for a day of prayer started during World War II. Members of congress came together to pray for the nation and for the men and women who were serving their country. In 1952 the U.S. Congress created the National Day of Prayer inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation and President Harry S. Truman signed it into law. "I look forward to the National Prayer Lunches every year because of its historical significance and it gives us an opportunity to practice our freedom to pray in public as Americans," Keener said. "Additionally, Chaplain Page is an amazing speaker and will have words of encouragement and empowerment to strengthen us spiritually and foster resiliency." Chaplain (Capt.) Derek Marley, 47th FTW chaplain, said that he would encourage people to attend so they will be strengthened and inspired. "This event helps us build unity across religious lines," Marley said. "It brings our wing and community together as one in prayer for our nation, its leaders and those who defend its principles."
