The Laughlin Chapel will host a weekend marriage enrichment retreat Feb. 17 to 19 at the San Antonio Drury Plaza Hotel.

The retreat is for military and civilians slated to deploy in the next six months or have deployed in the last year. It is designed to help couples reconnect with each other by improving reunion and reintegration skills while enjoying the San Antonio Riverwalk.

"Marriage Care as a whole lets couples talk, interact and focus their conversations about coming back together," said Chaplain (Capt.) Brian Nierman, 47th Flying Training Wing chaplain. "The group environment and interaction helps with talking about deployment issues."

The previous retreat held in April 2011 was a success with attendees, said Nierman. Before and after the retreat, couples were asked to rate their marriage on a scale of 1-10. After just two days at the retreat, many rated their marriages two points higher.

"We realize Team XL is a busy base," said Chaplain (Maj.) Dwayne Keener, 47th FTW chaplain. "This is a chance to step back and look at the family, to take a moment to walk away from work and back into their marriage."

While at the retreat, couples will attend four classes. Two will be on the morning of Feb. 18 with the third class scheduled that evening after dinner letting couples have the afternoon to spend time together. The final class will be held the following morning.

The classes will help improve communication skills and conflict resolution by walking couples through their wedding vows, Nierman said.

"We go through the retreat ourselves," he said. "I've been married 10 years and I still learned something new about my marriage."

Those attending will be responsible for travel and food expenses while family lodging at the Drury Plaza Hotel and supplies needed for class will be covered.

Childcare will be provided for those with children, but it is encouraged that couples leave them with friends or family since the retreat is designed for couples.

Because space is limited, those who wish to go must contact the chapel at (830) 298-5111 or e-mail Nierman at brian.nierman@laughlin.af.mil to reserve a spot before Feb. 10.
