The Airman and Family Readiness Center, in cooperation with the Del Rio Police Department, is scheduled to offer free Vehicle Identification Number etching on vehicle windows for all Laughlin personnel at the Auto Hobby Shop Sept. 1.

"Vehicles that have had their VIN etched are less attractive to potential thieves because of how much easier they are to identify as well as the need to replace all windows before attempting to sell parts to legitimate businesses," stated Anthony Williams of AFRC.

"VIN etched cars have a 64 percent lower theft rate than their non-etched counterparts and up to an 85 percent greater chance of recovery as well," said Williams. "Recovery is one of the largest positives VIN etching offers. Being so close to the border in Del Rio, deterring theft is important."

Those who have had their windows VIN etched are sometimes eligible for car insurance discounts from three to 15 percent depending on insurance company and state of residence. Residents of the state of Texas are ineligible for this discount; however, the potential for discounts following a permanent change of station exist.

Williams noted that to take advantage of this amazing opportunity, participants should register by Aug. 31 and the AFRC has a limited number of appointments available. For more information, contact (830) 298-5620 or (830) 298-5448.
