Laughlin recently welcomed some fresh new faces that will spend their summer working here.

Early on the morning of June 6, 87 local students joined the Laughlin team through the 10-week summer hire program.

"Students are expected to work hard, demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow in their careers. Most importantly, the students are expected to show eagerness when taking on new challenges," said Jessica Johnson, 47th Force Support Squadron student programs administrator.

Laughlin's summer hire program first began in 1994 after the Office of Personnel Management's revised regulations allowed students the opportunity to work on military installations. Since then, Laughlin has employed anywhere from 50 to 150 students many summers depending on the funding available.

"This is a great community outreach program. It benefits Laughlin by allowing the work load to be distributed around the base. It's also a great opportunity for Laughlin to train and mentor local kids as well as showcase different employment opportunities in the Air Force," said Johnson.

Students have been assigned to various jobs around the base including the 47th FSS, the 47th Operations Group and 47th Directorate Maintenance. Cactus Lanes, Losano Fitness Center and the Youth Center received summer hire employees as well.

"This job is really helping me save up money for my college years. I wouldn't have been able to find as great of a job without the summer hire program," said Erica Martinez, Child Development Center summer hire employee.
