22 Laughlin members earn college degrees Published May 27, 2011 By Senior Airman Scott Saldukas 47th Flying Training Wing public affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Twenty-two Laughlin members received their diplomas for earning their collegiate degree here during a graduation ceremony at Club XL May 26. The graduates included eight Park University students who received an associate, bachelor's and master's degree, 13 Community College of the Air Force associate degree recipients and one American Military University bachelor degree recipient. For the graduates, the education center plays a vital role in earning their degree and is only fitting they would host the graduation ceremony. "I feel it's important the graduates be recognized for their personal and professional achievements," said Christine Engel, Laughlin Education Center chief of education and training. "Completing their education while in the Air Force speaks volumes and should be highlighted." Even though only one ceremony is held each year at Laughlin, it is the reason why the education center is here, Ms. Engel said. "This is why we do what we do," she said. "Seeing them recognized while graduating makes everything worthwhile." Tech. Sgt. Abraham Avila, 47th Aerospace and Operations Physiology flight chief, was one of the graduates and agreed the ceremony was well deserved. "The people graduating put in a lot of hard work," he said. "Being recognized like that gives you a sense of pride knowing what you accomplished." While feeling proud of the recent accomplishment is expected, each student has their own reason for completing their degree. "The reason why I got my second CCAF is that your Air Force career is going to end at some point," Sergeant Avila said. "Doing this helps you set yourself up for success and gives you an edge when you start looking for other jobs."
