The Health and Wellness Center recently brought in a gait analysis system to help the Laughlin community become more efficient runners and identify posture imbalances that can lead to exercise related injuries.

"By assessing the way a person walks or runs, the gait analysis measures excessive improper movements caused by postural abnormalities, overactive or underactive muscles or training with improper gait over time," said Ray Torres, 47th Medical Operations Squadron exercise physiologist.

In addition to assessing a person's movements, the gait analysis provides information about the correct running shoes a person should be wearing.

"With the increased pressure of the new Fitness Assessment standards, individuals are running more than ever trying to prepare for their Fitness Assessment. With increase running comes increased chances of injury," said Torres.

Laughlin is one of approximately 25 air force bases that have a gait analysis system at their installation, but Laughlin's system is unique in that it is mobile.

"Our gait analysis system is so versatile and mobile that we can take it to the outdoor track, gym or even the weight room to capture functional movement," said Torres. "I can capture footage of individuals running on our outdoor track, lifting weights in the weight room or swinging the golf club at the golf course."

From senior airmen to colonels, from pilots to civilians, from ages 10 to 56, close to 50 people have used the gait analysis system to improve their exercise routines. In fact, each member of the 47th Flying Training Wing chapel has tested the gait analysis.

"After using the gait analysis, Mr. Torres discovered that I need prescribed exercise and jogging shoes. He gave me a wealth of information and I've already purchased the jogging shoes I need. I've noticed an improvement in my jogging already," said Major Dwayne Keener, 47th FTW chaplain. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to participate in the gait analysis and encourage anyone who thinks they may need to take advantage of this awesome resource to do so as soon as possible."
