Laughlin members took to the pavement as they participated in the Shooting Star Half Marathon and 5K here Dec. 11.

"The purpose of the event is to promote great fitness and wellness by providing the community of Laughlin a challenging fitness event," said Nicole Rollins of Laughlin's Losano Fitness Center.

Rollins said the event was a huge success and that there were more than 100 participants between the 5K and half marathon, making it the largest 5K and half marathon event in Laughlin's history.

Unlike previous Laughlin marathons, the Shooting Star Half Marathon and 5K incorporated technology. Each participant put a smart chip inside their shoe. As the participants would start and finish their races, they would run over a mat with sensors that would register their specific beginning and ending times. The set of smart chips and mats, which were borrowed from Lackland Air Force Base, provided members with very accurate electronic timing.

"The event was great and there were definitely some fast people out there," said 1st Lt. Stu Renz, 47th Operation Support Squadron, who finished first overall in the 5K event.

Laughlin members were given the opportunity to preregister for the event. Some members found out about the event later than others, such as 2nd Lt. Ken Washington and 2nd Lt. Luke Brown, both of the 47th OSS, who only found out about the event the night before but were not about to let that stop them from participating.

"I was good to go on the half marathon, but my roommate, who informed me about the event, wanted me to run with him and he was only down for the 5K," said 2nd Lt. Brown who ran the 5K.
