Ah, the holidays are here. When we last left off, you had just saved the weird neighbor from choking to death on a pistachio nut. Now, with Thanksgiving at your back, the holiday season is in full swing. Heck, they've been playing Christmas carols in the mall since Halloween. Yes, it's true, the "20 Items or Less" line at our local shopping store isn't the only place you'll find danger this time of year. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics has a few good rules for Christmas trees, interior and exterior lights and toy safety.

First, be smart when caring for your Christmas tree. If you spend 20 minutes a day vacuuming up needles, odds are the tree isn't getting enough water. Always keep trees, live or artificial, away from fireplaces, radiators and portable heaters. Most artificial trees are fire resistant but there is no way that a live tree lasts 15 seconds against an open flame or heat source. Also, don't block exits or traffic routes with a big tree. For all you "Christmas Vacation" fans, make sure any lights you use for exterior lighting projects are certified for outdoor use.

Weather can play havoc on indoor lights and cause you lots of problems as a result. Despite the expert advice of Clark W. Griswold Jr., don't use tacks or staples to hang your lights. There are lots of safer options these days that will keep you from jamming metal objects into electrical wires. Also, never leave your lights on if you are going to bed or leaving the house. A simple short circuit could be disastrous.

If you dare to brave a toy store this time of year, select items that suit the age, ability and interests of children. Toys that are too advanced may pose safety hazards for younger children or prove too difficult for some husbands to assemble. Yes, despite dad's intentions, always read the instructions. Left over parts should not be considered a stroke of genius and efficiency. On a very serious note, always take care with toys that have small parts or pieces. These can present a choking hazard for little ones.

The holidays are a great time to celebrate and share the holiday spirit with family and friends. Just take care to make sure that Mainway Toys' Pretty Peggy Ear-Piercing Set or Bag O' Glass aren't on your gift list.
