Laughlin prepares for sixth-annual Adventure Race Published March 8, 2010 By 2nd Lt. Jonathan Cook 47th Flying Training Wing public affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Nearly 100 teams from different bases all around the country are scheduled to gather at 7:30 a.m. April 10 at Laughlin's Lasano Fitness Center to kick off the sixth-annual Laughlin Air Force Base Adventure Race. The race began when Laughlin members decided to start Laughlin's own version of a triathlon. Each year the course and events have changed slightly, adding to the adventure, said 2nd Lt. Michelle Mahar, a race director with the 47th Force Support Squadron. The race starts with 28 miles of biking, continues with seven miles of running and finishes with two miles of rafting at Lake Amistad. "It's a very fun and positive experience," said Lt. Col. Jon Counsell, 47th Flying Training Wing director of plans and programming. "The cycling is a blast and paddling is serious cardio. If you have not participated in the Adventure Race before leaving Laughlin, you have missed out." Two types of teams will participate in the race: an Xtreme team made up of four people who will each complete the entire course, or a relay team made up of five to eight people with four people on the course at all times. However, all team members are required to stay within 100 feet of each other throughout the entire race. This year's route will remain top secret until the day of the event. More than 100 volunteers are needed to make the race happen. Those who want to volunteer should contact their squadron's point of contact. "The whole point of this race is to have fun with your teammates," said Lieutenant Mahar. "It brings the base together for a great day out." Registration costs $100 per team.
