The Super Bowl in Miami is not the only major football championship game happening this week.

The Laughlin flag football championship game was held here Feb. 1 between teams from the 47th Operations Support Squadron and the 47th Force Support Squadron.

Airman 1st Class Richard Weatherby, 47th OSS quarterback, threw three touchdown passes and kicker Airman 1st Class Ameer Armoto added three extra points to give the 47th OSS a 21 to 12 victory.

"We just wanted to come out, play hard and do whatever we had to do to get this victory," said Airman Armoto. "We've worked hard all year and it feels good to end the season as champs."

The 47th FSS team was led by quarterback 2nd Lt. Mike McVay who threw for two touchdowns, one in each half. The team's place kicker could not convert on the extra point attempt following his first touchdown, which left 47th FSS trailing by one point.

Toward the end of the first half, Airman Weatherby threw his second touchdown pass shortly after 47th FSS scored their first; giving 47th OSS a 14 to six halftime lead. The 47th FSS had an opportunity late in the first half to pull closer, but a controversial penalty kept them from doing so.

The 47th OSS struck first in the second half and after Airman Armoto's extra point, they held a comfortable 21 to six lead.

Lieutenant McVay was able to throw his second touchdown pass as time expired, but it was too little, too late as 47th OSS claimed the game and the base championship.

"We played a great team that gave us some problems during the regular season, but we were finally able to get the upper hand" said Senior Airman Luke Smith, 47th Operations Support Squadron's player-coach. "Once we got rolling, we couldn't be stopped."
