A sophomore at the University of Texas at San Antonio and former summer employee of Laughlin was awarded a $1000 scholarship here Nov. 6.

Cody Mitchell, who is in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at UTSA, won an essay contest with the theme of 'The High Cost of Freedom' and earned $1000 to use as he wishes toward school expenses.

"I am very grateful for this and I really appreciate it," said Mitchell. "It's really going to help me at school."

The essay contest, which was Air Force wide and included 154 entrants, was sponsored by the Air Force Services Club Membership Scholarship Program. Mitchell was one of only 25 winners from Air Force bases worldwide.

"Entries from Laughlin are submitted to a board who chooses the winners," said Susan Powell, Chief Sustainment Services flight chief. "The winners are then submitted to the Air Force Services Agency for Air Force level consideration."

Mitchell, whose father is an Air Force retiree, says he plans to join the Air Force after graduating college.

"I've seen the benefits and the lifestyle the Air Force offers and I think it will be a career that will fit me well," said Mitchell.
