Laughlin's Book Mark Library Summer Reading Challenge came to a close with their annual ice cream social held here recently.

The program, which originated in 2002 and was developed by a library volunteer, challenges children to read 12 books throughout the summer and write a summary of their favorite one.

In 2002, 17 children completed the challenge, and in 2003, 21 more students participated and reached the established goal. Over the years, the program grew into what it is today.

This summer a record 41 children completed the challenge. Each participant received a gift card and was invited to the annual ice cream social.

Next year's Summer Reading Challenge is scheduled to kick off in early June 2010.
