The summer of 2008 has already been a record-breaking season for Laughlin Air Force Base and its Summer Hire Program.

This year 122 summer employees were hired compared to last year's 44, said Rosemary Capozziello, Military and Civilian Personnel Flight chief with the 47th Force Support Squadron.

The program was originally started in 1994 when the Office of Personnel Management revised its regulations allowing students the opportunity to work on military installations. The program allows students to get a look at the military from the inside with different types of jobs. It is also an opportunity for the students here to expand their resumes and get a learning experience with the military.

"We hired clerks and laborers and the students are being paid based on their experience. Summer Hire employees will be working at various locations here for 20 hours a week during the next 10 weeks," said Dhalia Garcia, 47th Civilian Personnel Flight.

"We want to keep our youth busy and help them earn a little extra money," said Garcia. "That is why the number has more than doubled; compared to how many were hired last summer."

Now with so many Summer Hires working for Laughlin, some can't help but be excited about the opportunity they have been given.

"I'm really thrilled about working here," said Ana Musquiz, a Summer Hire with the 47th Maintenance Directorate.

Musquiz will be attending college in San Antonio in the fall and said, "The work hours are great, the people I work with are awesome and I'm very grateful that I'm getting such a great learning experience with the military. I will definitely look forward to including this job experience in my future resume."

The summer program runs from June 9 through August 16.
