TheĀ 12th Annual United States Air Force Marathon will take place on September 20, 2008, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Events include the marathon, wheelchair marathon, half marathon, individual 10K, and team 10K.
This year Headquarters Air Education and Training Command will continue its support of this fitness event. Two teams of four members (one all female and one all male team) and four individual runners (two men, two women) will represent AETC in the Men's Open Relay, Women's Open Relay and Individual categories respectively. Teams/individuals will be selected based on past performance. All competitors must be active duty Air Force members assigned to AETC.

The teams will be comprised of four members from the same installation. Members participating in the Air Force Marathon are authorized Permissive TDY in accordance with AFI 36-3003, Military Leave Program. HQ AETC will provide a personal maintenance allowance for the people selected for the official AETC team. The command will also pay for race entry fees, transportation, lodging, warm-up suits, and running shirts for the MAJCOM-sponsored teams.

If you desire to run as part of the AETC sponsored team submit your team/individual nominations on AF Form 303, Specialized Sports Training, to your local fitness center. Each fitness center director will submit their most qualified team/individuals for each of two relay categories and the two full marathon categories, respectively. Submissions must be done on the AF Form 303, one per individual. Be sure to include relay category (men's/women's relay, men's/women's individual full marathon), and athletic uniform sizes on the form. The AETC team selection board will meet in late July 2008.

The USAF Marathon is always held in September to commemorate the founding of the Air Force as a separate military service on September 18, 1947. The Air Force Marathon runners pass by the Air Force Museum, Air Force Institute of Technology, the Wright-Patterson AFB flight line and the Wright Brothers Museum. Some runners describe the race as more challenging than the Boston Marathon. The marathon is open to the public and has competitors from around the world participating. AETC is proud of their runners and their successes in the marathon.
