Do you know how many servings of fruits and vegetables you're recommended to have according to the newest food guide pyramid?

A packed classroom of home-schooled children who attended a healthy living class as a part of National Nutrition Month at Laughlin's Health and Wellness Center April 3 could tell you just that.

The class began with the children enjoying a small serving of a healthy fruit smoothie while they learned about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating habits.

The class learned about the structure and benefits of the new food guide pyramid, released in 2005 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

They were also taught keys to a healthier lifestyle and the proper serving sizes for different categories of food.

After the class Christine Anderson, the HAWC's registered dietician, offered prizes to students who were able to answer questions about the information.

"The new food pyramid has not been around that long," said Anderson. "That's why we at the HAWC thought it was a good idea to offer this class to the home-schooled children affiliated with the base. It helps them get up to speed with it and a healthier way of life."
