The abandoned temporary lodging facilities on Laughlin still display a sign which reads "Pets are not allowed in lodging." This wasn't a problem for Border Protection and Customs agents Jan. 9, because the dogs they were running through the units weren't pets.

Four BPC K-9 unit agents brought two drug-sniffing dogs to Laughlin to receive valuable aggression-building training which can only be accomplished in a handful of places.

The dogs are trained to aggressively sniff out drugs, aggressive meaning they scratch and bite at the location where they smell the drugs, one agent said.

Since the old TLF buildings are scheduled for demolition, the BPC agents can let the dogs scratch and bite at the walls and cabinets without worrying about the damage they may cause. It's great for building the dogs' aggression, an agent said.

During the training, an agent hid several packets of narcotic substances throughout the housing units, and then each dog was individually taken through to sniff out the packages. With little help from the trainers, both dogs found every package within minutes.
