Laughlin Rising Six visit Del Rio Nursing Home Published Dec. 28, 2006 By 2nd Lt. Courtney Kippenberger 47 FTW Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AFB, Texas -- Members of Laughlin's Rising Six traded in their camouflage covers for bright red hats as they geared up to spread some holiday cheer during a visit to Del Rio Nursing Home Dec. 20. Arriving at the end of exercise class, Laughlin members kicked off what they called Operation Holiday Cheer by making their way around the room and introducing themselves to the residents. Even though this was the first time the Rising Six has gone into a nursing home like this, they knew exactly what they wanted to accomplish with this visit. "Our main objective is to spend quality time with each resident. We want to let them know they are remembered and we care," said Staff Sgt. Christine Newton, 47th Operations Support Squadron. Although the residents just love to sit and talk with visitors, Rising Six came fully equipped with gift bags, filled with sugar-free candy, a pair of socks and a comb. "Today, it was all about the residents. When they smile, it makes us happy," said Airman Marcellus Pouncil, 47th Operations Support Squadron. And smile they did, as members of Rising Six spent the majority of their time making rounds to each resident's room and talking with them. Some residents enjoyed having their hair brushed, a book read to them or just simply sitting together and watching television. With the success of Operation Holiday Cheer, Rising Six plans to make a habit of getting into the community and helping others. In coming months, they plan to visit and interact with the Boys and Girls Club of America, said Technical Sgt. Wyeshia Richardson, 87th Flying Training Squadron.
