On Sept. 11, 2001, the world stood still. At approximately 8:45 a.m., a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center, and America held its breath. Eighteen minutes later, the other tower was hit, causing a massive explosion that sprayed burning debris over Manhattan. It wasn't until later the nation learned of another airplane crashing into the Pentagon and a foiled attempt due to brave men and women aboard United Flight 93.

In the end, more than 3,000 Americans lost their lives.

In honor of those we lost, Sept. 11 has been named Patriot Day, a national day of service and remembrance.

At Laughlin, base members can show their support for the victims of this tragic attack by registering for the Patriot Day 5K Run/Walk Sept. 11, 2015. The event will start with a ceremony at 7 a.m., followed by the run at 7:30 a.m.

"Two guest speakers will speak at the ceremony, going over their memories on where they were that September day how it affected them," said Ebony Lemaster, 47th Student Squadron NCO in charge of commander's support staff."

Registration is open until they day of the event. Uniformed members must be in Air Force physical training gear for event.

"Our goal is to show remembrance for the day and look at the courage and dedication our country went through to get through the tragedy. It's the day everything changed. It's part of our history," said Lemaster.
