Youth Center summer camps Published June 4, 2015 By Airman Brandon May 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- A variety of summer camps will be offered by the Youth Center for children ages 5 to 18 between June 8 and August 15 at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. "The camps will range from basic sports and archery, to gardening and fine arts," said Omar Matos, the youth programs director here. The summer camps will kick off with "Wild Week". This camp will provide various teamwork activities; one activity will be based off the T.V. show "Fear Factor". The Youth Center has a new camp for this summer called "Sideline Sports". The camp will teach children the fundamentals of nontraditional sports such as badminton, lacrosse, water polo and ultimate frisbee. For those that enjoy the outdoors, "Adventure Club" will teach water safety, maneuvering, and other fundamentals of kayaking and paddle boarding. The camp is scheduled to start June 11, from noon to 4 p.m. and take place every Thursday for children ages 9 and up. Another new camp for this summer is "Paintball". The camp is designed to be a strategic, yet fun team building exercise that will also teach safety. The Youth Center has many more camps to offer this summer such as the more well-known activities of volleyball, archery, basketball and more. "We try to deliver programs that best fit the needs of the children on base," said Matos. This summer's camps are listed below: Wild Week: This week is scheduled for June 8 to June 11 and will teach children how to work as a team and conquer their fears with unusual activities such as gross food challenges. Volleyball: This camp is scheduled for June 15 to June 19 and will teach the fundamentals of the sport, sportsmanship and team work. Sideline Sports: This camp is scheduled for June 22 to June 26 and will involve learning the fundamentals and playing nontraditional sports. Safari Week: This week is scheduled for June 29 to July 2 and will consist of examining different animals and different environments. Freedom Week: This week is scheduled for July 6 to July 10 and will involve designing flags and preparing American based foods. Paintball: This camp is scheduled for July 6 to July 10 and will provide the fundamentals of the game and proper safety precautions to take. World Traveler's Week: This week is scheduled for July 13 to July 17 and will involve learning the basics of geocaching. Archery: This camp is scheduled for July 13 to July 17 and will start with safety and progress to shooting. Culinary: This camp is scheduled for July 13 to July 17 and will teach the fundamentals of the culinary arts. Basketball: This camp is scheduled for July 20 to July 24, and will teach the fundamentals of the game. Science Week: This week is scheduled for July 27 to July 31, and will consist of robotic projects, windmill project kits and more. Basketball: This camp is scheduled for July 27 to July 31, and will teach the fundamentals of the game. Football: This camp is scheduled for August 3 to August 6 and will teach the fundamentals, team work, and sportsmanship of football. Gridiron Week: This week is scheduled for August 3 to August 7 and is a football themed week that will teach the fundamentals, team work and sportsmanship of football. Fine Arts Week: Scheduled for August 10 to August 14 and will be fine arts themed and lead up to a play. Missoula Children's Theater: This camp is scheduled for August 10 to August 15 and will involve tryouts and practice to put together a play.
