February Family Advocacy Classes Published Feb. 3, 2015 By 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 47th Medical Group is offering a series of free family advocacy classes open to all base personnel, ranging in topics from baby care to stress management classes, throughout the month of February. OB Orientation and Bundles for Babies: This class is an overview of what to expect during pregnancy. Participants will receive information related to the prenatal period, labor and delivery, and post-partum. Dads are encouraged to attend! Even though this class is mandatory for all pregnant active duty members, it is highly recommended for everyone. "Bundles for Babies" is included in coordination with the Airman and Family Readiness Center. Pediatrics, TRICARE, Dental, and the Health & Wellness Center will brief on prenatal related topics. Lunch is provided. Feb. 3, 2015 47th MDG Training Room 8:30 a.m. to noon Teen Talk: This class will examine some of the issues teenagers face. Topics include: cyber bullying, building communication, wellness, abusive relationships and other topics which will interest teens. Youth do not have to be enrolled at the youth center to attend. Feb. 4, 2015 Feb. 11, 2015 Feb. 18, 2015 Feb. 25, 2015 Youth Center 4:30 to 5 p.m. Couples Communication: This workshop helps you understand yourself and connect with your partner in more constructive, meaningful ways. You will learn how to communicate effectively about day-to-day events and important issues. Class is designed for all ages and stages of a relationship. Whether engaged, recently married, or been married for many years, there is always something new to learn and aspects of the relationship to explore. Feb. 5, 2015 Mental Health Conference Room 2 to 3:30 p.m. Parenting Essentials: This course will examine some of the issues parents face with teens and children such as: cyber bullying, communication, drugs and alcohol, suicide prevention and other topics of parental interest. Feb. 10, 2015 Feb. 24, 2015 Mental Health Conference Room 10 to 11 a.m. 1-2-3 Magic Parenting: The course consists of one two-hour session that offers parenting solutions that are easy to learn and work with children ages 2-12. Feb. 10, 2015 Mental Health Conference Room 1 to 3 p.m. Baby Care Basics: This class helps guide soon-to-be parents in taking care of their newborn. Participants will learn and practice basic infant care skills and comforting techniques. Infant safety and health care will be reviewed and reinforced. Information related to newborn appearance, procedures done during the hospital stay, and normal reflexes of the newborn will be presented. Education on calming a crying baby and Shaken Baby Syndrome will complete the class. Handouts will be provided and dads are encouraged to attend. Registration is mandatory to attend. Feb. 10, 2015 47th MDG Training Room 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Combating Conflict: This class will provide participants with training in non-violent methods of problem solving. In identifying skills and managing anger in confrontational situations. Attendees will learn alternative strategies for dealing with angry feelings. Classes are offered quarterly. Feb. 11, 2015 Mental Health Conference Room 1 to 3 p.m. Third Trimester to Labor Class: This class is designed to provide participants with information on what to expect during the third trimester and will take them through the onset of labor, into delivery, and the post-partum period. Handouts will be provided and dads are encouraged to attend. Registration is mandatory to attend. Classes are cancelled the night prior if there are no participants signed up.
