Laughlin's chapter of the Green Knights motorcycle club escorted the remains of a veteran to his final resting place in San Antonio, Texas, Aug. 8.

The Green Knights are a military motorcycle club with members spanning all ranks and military branches. The club was started in 1999 with the goal of bringing together military riders in order to promote mentorship and a safe riding environment. Since its start, this military club has grown exponentially, to more than 125 chapters worldwide.

The remains being transported belonged to retired Army Staff Sgt. Clyde "Jay" Slonaker, who passed away at the age of 84 after a lengthy battle with cancer. His dying wish was to be escorted by the Green Knights to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Slonaker joined the Army in 1946 and fought in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

"I was deeply honored because this is not something we get to do often," said Master Sgt. Joey Husted, Green Knights chapter 101 president. "I'm glad I was able to be a part of his last ride."

Five members of the Green Knights rode three hours from Ballinger, Texas, to Fort Sam Houston, escorting Slonaker to his final resting place. Once there, they formed the flag line at his funeral.

"While I didn't know him personally, the fact that he was a veteran and member of the knights was all that mattered to me," said Tech. Sgt. Shane Buss, Green Knights chapter 101 member. "It was a way to give back to the heroes who paved the path that I'm following."

Thanks to the actions of these Green Knights, Slonaker, a man who loved anything with motorcycles and anything military was able to get in one more ride.
