Cans for a cause: Feds Feed Families Campaign kicks off Published Aug. 21, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Nathan Maysonet 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- All across base members of Team XL have begun collecting food donations as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Feds Feed Families campaign. From Aug. 13 to 26, Laughlin members can donate nonperishable food items in collection carts all over base that will go directly to Val Verde County's local food bank, Loaves and Fishes. Loaves and Fishes provides food to more than 1,240 local families each month. "There are a lot of hungry families in Val Verde County who need our help," said Maj. Christopher Perkins, Laughlin's Feds Feed Families campaign coordinator. "This event is our chance to come together and help the community." This year, the goal is for every Airman to donate two items. "We know that Team XL can do it," said Perkins. "We are a close knit community here on base and when people are in need, we rise to the challenge." The food collected will be divided by weight amongst the families in need. Avoid large food items such as 20-pound bags of rice, because these donations cannot be opened and divided amongst families. Canned food is best but all non-perishables items are welcome. If donating beverages, only boxed juices and powdered drink mixes are accepted. "The goal is to gather a variety of foods that will make a true difference in someone's life that may be struggling through hard times," said Perkins.
