Laughlin's Civil Air Patrol composite squadron will host their Great Start program May 18, from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. here.

The Great Start is a cadet orientation program that will feature aerospace education, lessons on leadership and ice breaker activities. The minimum age to join the cadet program is 12 and maximum is 17.

"It's a great opportunity to get involved and learn different skills at a young age," said Cadet 1st Lt. Paul MacGregor, CAP cadet commander. "I joined because my dad took me to a meeting, it seemed interesting and I quickly made friends with the cadets there."

Located at the base library, the event will start with a welcome and introductions. After the first hour parents are welcome to leave or stay. A pizza dinner will be provided to the children during the orientation.

"We want parents to come out and learn about the advantages CAP can give their children," said senior member Leonard Sobieski, CAP TX-047 charter squadron commander. "The biggest thing we want to get across is there is no military obligation. This is an opportunity for these kids to excel and learn leadership through a structured program."

Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the Air Force and has no military obligation associated with membership. Civil Air Patrol focuses on three primary missions: emergency services, aerospace education and cadet training.

The cadet program offers many leadership and learning opportunities. To join, contact Sobieski at captx047cc@hotmail.com or 254-523-7118. Meetings are held on Sunday's from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the base library.
