Budget cuts impact recycling center Published April 30, 2014 By 47th Civil Engineer Squadron LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Beginning May 1, the base recycling center will no longer receive glass and tin cans as part of the negotiated service contract cut. This reduction is driven by budgetary reductions to most recycling programs across the Air Force. Additionally, difficult market conditions across Texas have made some bulk materials more costly to recycle. Recycling can be a significant act of conservation. Laughlin's Recycle Center, run by Goodwill Industries, will continue to provide recycling services for the following items: aluminum, plastics, cardboard and mixed paper such as newsprint and bond. The recycle center requests everyone's help keeping these items separated, the only exception is different types of paper, which will be collected and stored as a mixed stream that will not require segregated storage. It is important to ensure that items that are not recyclable and hazardous are properly disposed of, such as styrofoam and cellophane wrap. Everyone is encouraged to continue using the base recycling center drop off located at Bldg 2018 on Arkansas Street, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. After-hours bins are also available there for people to use. When using the drop-off bins, ensure all containers are free of food and liquid, separate your items and deposit them in the appropriate bins. Leaving your recyclable materials on the ground is prohibited. This will ensure that those items don't blow away in the wind. For items like glass and tin cans, please use the City of Del Rio's Recycle Center which is open to the public on 1409 E. Gibbs Street. These changes do not affect Hunt Housing recycling operations.
