May Family Advocacy classes Published April 24, 2014 By 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 47th Medical Group is offering a series of free family advocacy classes open to all base personnel ranging in topics from baby care to stress management classes throughout the month of May. Parenting Essentials: This course will examine some of the issues parents face with teens and children. Topics include: cyberbullying, building communication, drugs and alcohol, suicide prevention, and other topics which will interest parents. May 1, 2014 Mental Health Conference Room 2 to 3 p.m. Obstetrics Orientation and "Bundles for Babies": This class is an overview of what to expect during pregnancy. Participants will receive information related to the prenatal period, labor and delivery, and post-partum. Fathers are encouraged to attend. This class is mandatory for all pregnant active duty members. "Bundles for Babies" is included in coordination with the Laughlin Airman and Family Readiness Center. Pediatrics, Tricare, dental, and the Health & Wellness Center will brief on prenatal related topics. Lunch is provided for attendees. Registration is mandatory to attend. May 6, 2014 47th MDG Training Room 8:30 a.m. to noon Combating Conflict: This class will educate participants on non-violent methods of problem solving, identifying skills or managing anger in confrontational situations and will learn alternative strategies for dealing with anger. May 6, 2014 47th MDG Training Room 1 to 3 p.m. Teen Talk: This class will examine some of the issues teenagers face. Topics include: cyber bullying, building communication, wellness, abusive relationships, and other topics which will interest teens. Youth do not have to be enrolled at the youth center to attend. May 7, 2014 Youth Center 4:30 to 5 p.m. Baby Care Basics: This class gives soon-to-be parent(s) tips for taking care of their newborn. Participants will learn and practice basic infant care skills and comforting techniques. Infant safety and health care will be reviewed and reinforced. Information related to newborn appearance, procedures done during the hospital stay, and normal reflexes of the newborn will be presented. Education on calming a crying baby and Shaken Baby Syndrome will complete the class. Handouts provided. Dads are encouraged to attend. Registration is mandatory to attend. May 13, 2014 47th MDG Training Room 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Third Trimester to Labor Class: This class is designed to provide participants with information on what to expect during the third trimester, and will take them through the onset of labor, into delivery, and the post-partum period. Dads are encouraged to attend. May 20, 2014 47th MDG Training Room 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. To sign-up for a Laughlin class, call 298-6422. You must sign up for each class. Classes are cancelled the night prior if there are no participants signed up.
