For the first time, Laughlin is hosting a Volunteer Fair at Club XL April 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. to inform base members about volunteer opportunities in Del Rio.

The purpose of the fair is to better involve Laughlin Airmen with their local community.

"I always hear new base members say there's nothing to do in Del Rio," said Joel Langton, an event coordinator. "We're putting this event together to prove that there are several organizations within Del Rio who encourage Laughlin members to get involved in their community."

Even though Del Rio holds a population of just over 34,000, the city and Laughlin won the coveted 2013 Altus Trophy, a major command award given to communities who give substantial support to its local Air Force base.

That trophy was a testament to Del Rio's involvement with Laughlin.

"A lot of Laughlin Airmen are usually new to the area, and this is a great way for them to get involved in the community and get to know the people," said Manny Carrillo, Del Rio Lions Club secretary. "There are different organizations and services Del Rio can offer that people may not know about."

Several different organizations will attend the event, ranging from the Del Rio Council for the Arts to the Texas Veterans' Commission.
