Laughlin's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office is trying something new to instill awareness and bring support for survivors of sexual assault.

The Strike Out Sexual Assault Bowl-A-Thon is April 28 at Cactus Lanes Bowling Alley on Laughlin Air Force Base, and the event is open to all Laughlin members. The event will be split into two sessions: 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

"Each session is limited to 10 teams of four members," said Sabrina Peña, 47th Flying Training Wing Sexual Assault Response coordinator. "It'll be a fun event to learn and share lunch with wingmen in support of a tough subject."

The cost is $6 per person and includes one game of bowling and a meal, as well as the possibility to receive door prizes handed out during the event. Meal choices include a turkey wrap, chicken tenders or a cheeseburger.

"We will be handing out 'surprise prizes' throughout the sessions," said Peña. "Awards will also be given to the team that shows the most spirit, the team with the most strikes and the squadron with the most bowlers. To win the award for the most strikes the team must follow all the rules."

Rules will be stated at the beginning of each session before bowling begins, and to make the event more personal, participants will be bowling for survivors who are connected to Laughlin, explained Peña.

"We want people to know how survivors overcome sexual assault in hopes that if anybody is silently suffering, they will see their wingmen support them," said Peña.

Registration forms can be found on the SAPR SharePoint and deadline for team applications is 4:00 p.m. April 23. If all spots are filled but enough teams register, a second day will be planned for the extra teams. For more information, please contact the SAPR Office at 298-4545.
