The Laughlin Health and Wellness Center will begin the 5th annual Amazing Wellness Race for Team XL, March 3 through April 11.

March is National Nutrition Month, and the race is designed to promote a healthier lifestyle for those associated with Laughlin, whether they be service members or otherwise, who are 16 years old and up.

"Military members have to be ready to deploy at a moment's notice," said Ray Torres, 47th Medical Group HAWC Health Promotion manager and exercise physiologist. "Their bodies have to be prepared for that, and events like this promote that kind of conditioning."

The Amazing Wellness Race is a six-week event involving a four-person team competing to "travel around the world." Points are added for various nutritional meals or exercises, and each healthy action transfers to "miles" used to calculate how far a team will go.

"I think it's a great program," said Terra Wade, 47th Flying Training Wing secretary and a participant of the race last year. "It gave me the motivation I needed to continue a healthy diet."

Besides the points-to-miles system, teams can also win by losing the most accumulated body fat during the event.

"The overall goal of both categories is to make a healthier Laughlin," said Torres.
