This article is part of a multi-series to educate the reader on Major Graded Areas (MGA) associated with the new Air Force Inspection System. Major Graded Areas are important because they provide the structure that all inspectors, both wing and major command, will use to conduct inspections. The four MGAs are Managing Resources, Leading People, Improving the Unit and Executing the Mission.

This month's article is on the "Leading People" MGA and the five main sub-categories: Communication, Discipline, Training, Development and Quality of Life Engagement. Each sub-category contains several topic areas, and these help grade the overall topic, with the intent of grading leadership at all levels of the unit.

An easier way to understand "MGA 2 - Leading People" is to look at the life of a capital "A" Airman. In today's AF we need good leaders, and this comes from having effective communication, discipline, ensuring proper training is completed, developing yourself and your airmen (personally and professionally), as well as monitoring duty-day stress and time for social engagements. If you had an Airman win Below the Zone or quarterly award, or if your unit has an overall 92% average for their Career Development Courses end of course test, talk about it. If you have an airman that doesn't quite meet fitness standards, then ensure they receiving the resources they need and talk about it. This process not only happens from a unit commander's perspective, but also supervisor-to-Airman and from Airman-to-Airman. Be a good leader/wingman and we can all lead people effectively!
