National Prayer Luncheon set for Feb. Published Feb. 10, 2014 By 2nd Lt. William M. Tyrrell 47th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Team XL is slated to host the National Prayer Luncheon at Club XL Feb. 27. "The goal of the National Prayer Luncheon is to affirm the nation's diverse spiritual foundation," said Chaplain (Capt.) Derek Marley, 47th Flying Training Wing chaplain. "We want to encourage spiritual resiliency in the face of difficult circumstances." Every year the chapel brings in a guest speaker to inspire those who attend. This year retired Chaplain (Col.) Albert Hockaday will speak. "We wanted him to talk to us because he is full of wisdom and has a great story that will bring value to our airmen," said Chaplain (Maj.) Andrew McIntosh, 47th FTW chaplain. Hockaday received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shaw University, North Carolina, and then furthered his education by getting two masters in divinity and sacred theology from Yale University. He entered the Air Force in July 1968 as a chaplain. While being stationed in places like Thailand and Japan, Hockaday started his own radio and television series to educate everybody on religion. After 28 years as a pastor to military members and their families, he retired from the Air Force in November 1996 with the permanent rank of colonel. "This is a great event for everyone who attends," said McIntosh. "Not only is there an inspirational speaker, but also the opportunity to join the nation's leaders together to focus on prayer." For those who are interested in attending, you can register by calling the chapel at 298-5111.
