Fire prevention and energy conservation goes base-wide

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  Throughout the week of Oct. 7 - 11, Laughlin's fire department is hosting a variety of fire prevention and energy conservation displays around base in support of Fire Prevention and Energy Conservation week.

The displays are to help educate base members on how they can save energy in their everyday life and how to prevent fires from occurring at their home or workplace.

"We're not only teaching them how to prevent fires, but also how to respond if one were to occur in their home," said Staff Sgt. Krystell Clemons, Laughlin fire department crew chief. "Displays and interactions like these are great, because it allows people to ask any questions they may have."

The displays and demonstrations include hand-outs on fire prevention and energy conservation materiel, a simulated drill on how to put out a fire, what to do during common kitchen fires and how to find ways to save energy in everyday life.

"We can directly save the government money through our energy conserving efforts," said David Morin, 47th CES base energy manager. "The more money we save, the more we can spend on things that are needed."

The week ends with Sparky the fire dog and the fire trucks visiting the child development center and a fire safety video and fire truck display at the base library's children reading session.

While most of the happenings are planned around educating base personnel through interactive and engaging activities, the message they carry is very real to the 47th CES fire fighters.

"We want people to retain this info to be better prepared if an emergency did happen," said Clemons. "The less fire incidents that occur on base, the safer base personnel and my fellow firefighters will be."
