Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas -- The Laughlin Air Force Base fire emergency services flight is hosting several events through the week of October 9, 2016, to help spread this year’s fire prevention week message. This year’s theme is “Don’t wait - check the date! Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.”
As the official sponsor of fire prevention week for more than 90 years, the National Fire Protection Association is promoting this year’s fire prevention week campaign to better educate the public about the critical importance of knowing how old their smoke alarms are and replacing them once they’re 10 years old.
NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code®, requires smoke alarms be replaced at least every 10 years.
The 10 year timeline starts at the date the product was manufactured, and can be found at the back of the detectors.
Additionally, smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries replaced once a year. Smoke alarms begin to chirp when they have low batteries, and should be checked.
The Laughlin Air Force Base fire emergency services flight, in partnership with hunt housing, has ensured that all of the smoke detectors in base housing have not expired, however, if residents are ever in doubt about their detectors call Hunt Housing for assistance. Personnel living off base are encouraged to check or have their landlord check the manufacture date on their smoke detectors and replace them if more than 10 years old.
